Founded in 1918, Douglass Residential College was the state's first public institution
of higher learning to admit women. Today it is the nation's largest
college for women. Of its over 3,000 students, 40 percent are in
the first generation of their family to attend college, a third
are women of color, 30 percent are from homes where a language other
than English is spoken, and 10 percent are of nontraditional age.
Douglass' innovative programs include an Emerging Leaders course
for selected first-year students and a course for all new students
called "Shaping a Life" that focuses on providing students
with tools to think critically about their own education and lives.
Douglass also sponsors a Global Village, where residents of small
houses on campus may immerse themselves in another language and
culture and earn a Certificate in International Studies. The college
is home also to the award-winning Douglass Project for Rutgers Women
in Math, Science, and Engineering.

Recently identified as one of the top three programs among more
than 700 nationally, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies
began from a single course in 1969 called "The Educated Woman
in Literature." Today, 30 faculty and 90 affiliated faculty
teach over 2,000 students annually in the department's undergraduate
major, M.A., and graduate certificate program. The curriculum has
grown to over 100 courses that explore the connections between feminist
theory and practice; consider the dynamics among gender, sexuality,
race, class, ethnicity, culture, and religion from both interdisciplinary
and disciplinary perspectives; and investigate women's and gender
issues in a global context. In fall 2002, the department inaugurated
a Ph.D. in Women's and Gender Studies.

The Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), founded in 1971
as a unit of
the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers, seeks to promote
greater understanding and knowledge about women's relationship to
politics and government and to enhance women's influence and leadership
in public life. CAWP is a leading authority in its field and a respected
bridge between the academic and political worlds. CAWP's programs
for women public officials provide vital information, motivation,
and contacts to increase the impact of women in politics and to
make political women's leadership more effective. The center's information
services program, with its award-winning web site, provides up-to-the-minute
information and analysis. CAWP's ongoing research addresses emerging
issues and questions about the status and impact of political women.
The center also offers educational programs designed to prepare
young women to participate in politics and public policymaking.

At the forefront of interdisciplinary feminist research for 20 years,
the Institute for Research on Women (IRW) has been a central force
in establishing Rutgers University as one of the most distinguished
research institutions in the world for the study of women and gender.
Affiliates include 900 faculty, graduate students, and advanced
undergraduates drawn from a wide range of disciplines on all three
of the university campuses. The IRW promotes innovative scholarship
on women and gender through interdisciplinary forums, lectures,
and conferences that bring together IRW affiliates with top visiting
scholars from the U.S. and abroad. Each year, the IRW selects faculty,
graduate students, and postdoctoral residential fellows to participate
in a weekly interdisciplinary research seminar on current themes.
Recent grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and
the Rockefeller Foundation have supported the IRW's residential
fellows program and its long-standing commitment to the dissemination
of gender scholarship among high school teachers and others outside
the university community.

Established in 2006, the Institute for Women & Art (IWA) brings
together Rutgers' faculty, curators, researchers and artists to promote
the study of women and art. The Institute supports and sponsors
scholarship, research, exhibitions and programming on topics pertaining
to women in art, including attention to past inequities, and promotes
the transformation of policies, institutions, attitudes and social
structures. It acts as a catalyst for creating an intellectual community
among scholars and practitioners associated with Rutgers University and
cooperates with other feminist, leadership and visual arts
organizations. The Institute for Women and Art advances the development
of Rutgers University as an internationally-known center for the study
of women and art. Among its numerous activities are:
The Feminist Art Project (feministartproject.rutgers.edu) and
WAAND: Women Artists Archives National Directory (waand.rutgers.edu).

The Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) develops and facilitates
women's leadership for women's human rights and social justice worldwide.
Founded in 1989 as a project of Douglass College, the center quickly
became a major world player advancing women's leadership in human
rights, with emphasis on violence against women, sexual and reproductive
health, and socioeconomic well-being. The center played a galvanizing
role in the United Nations conference on human rights held in Vienna
in 1993 and in the 1995 conference in Beijing, by helping secure
global policy commitments that "women's rights are human rights."
Programs include annual residential Women's Global Leadership Institutes
on campus, publications on women's and girls' human rights, and
work with many groups around the world to provide access to women's
leadership development training.

The Center for Women and Work (CWW) addresses the needs of working
women by studying public policies; fostering research; and sponsoring
programs for working women, policymakers, corporate leaders, and
community groups. The center's primary work is forging links between
researchers who study women and workplace issues and decision makers
in government, labor, corporate, and community organizations. A
major goal is to improve the situation of working women by creating
a dialogue that combines research findings with practical experiences.
CWW conducts and disseminates research, sponsors conferences, and
offers educational programs for individuals, organizations, and
the general public. CWW was founded in 1993 in Rutgers' School of
Management and Labor Relations.
