Douglass Residential College
Douglass Residential College

Founded in 1918 as the New Jersey College for Women, Douglass was the state’s first public institution of higher education open to women. From the start Douglass set the highest standards of academic excellence, providing women opportunities to excel in fields where they have been traditionally excluded. With outstanding programs to prepare women for leadership—in the sciences, the global economy, business, research education, public policy, communication and community service—Douglass steadfastly honors its mission while simultaneously evolving to meet the current needs of women.

Today at Douglass Residential College, all women enrolled as undergraduates in Rutgers -New Brunswick have the opportunity to join this unique institution with its supportive intellectual and social environment that empowers women regardless of major or career choice. The Douglass student experience includes a course that analyzes connections between the production of knowledge and women’s leadership. Students build on this mission course by becoming part of the Douglass educational pathways. Designed to help students gain the most from their college years, educational pathways combine academic courses, externships, co-curricular programs, and residential learning communities. Current pathways include women in science, women’s leadership, global programs, and a self-designed pathway—each pathway giving talented graduates a competitive edge.
