Speaking out about common but silenced experiences of abortion not only galvanized the women’s liberation movement, it helped to change the legal and social status of women in the US.
In this 60-minute session, Merle Hoffman will discuss the role of writing in her own experience fighting for women’s rights and why telling the truth about our lives is such a powerful tool. Her remarks will be followed by a 15-minute writing prompt and 20-25 minutes to share the writing with one another.
Presented by Dr. Roxane Gay, the Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair in Media, Culture and Feminist Studies at Rutgers University.

Merle Hoffman is one of the foremost architects of the feminist women’s health movement. In 1971, two years before Roe v. Wade, Hoffman helped establish one of the first abortion clinics in the United States—CHOICES Women’s Medical Center. Today CHOICES provides abortion care, birth control, gynecology, prenatal care, counseling services, tele-medicine, specialized care for teens, trans people, and the LGBTQ community, along with extensive educational outreach to schools, prisons, and women’s organizations.
Now, two years after Roe’s demise, Merle Hoffman has written CHOICES: A Post-Roe Abortion Rights Manifesto. Her decades of experience, research, and analysis shed light on the catastrophic repercussions of overturning Roe and what we must do to secure our right to bodily autonomy and establish safe and legal abortion access nationwide.
Presented by Dr. Roxane Gay, the Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair in Media, Culture and Feminist Studies at Rutgers University.
